She takes time to encourage clients to take action that positively deal with the immediate challenges they are facing, as well as empower them to manage their lives when other problem situations arise. Angela has a special interest in working with families. She has experience working with children and adolescents with behavioural challenges, helping individuals pursue personal development goals, working with couples as well as, helping families resolve various challenges.
Angela is big on collaborations and hence, works with a network of professionals who include psychiatrists, psychologists, coaches (finance/nutrition/parenting), mediators as well as a family lawyer. Therapeutic Approach
Angela recognizes that all human beings at one point or the other may need counselling support and that counselling done in an environment of trust, confidence, and safety yields great results. She also acknowledges that the search for fulfilment is a genuine search and the limitations one encounters in the process can be disheartening hence the need to empathize with her clients. However, she believes that people have the strength and resources to enable them to face their challenges. Clients need not remain in a state of being disturbed or yield to the thought that their fate is sealed by their past experiences. To this extent, Angela values Alfred Adler’s emphasis on choice and responsibility, meaning in life, and striving for success, completion, and perfection. Intentionality is key in this regard and the counsellor’s role is to offer guidance and sometimes re-educate the individual in the process. Evidently, this involves hard work and commitment from both the counsellor and the client. Angela considers that one of her key responsibilities to her clients, therefore, is to help them to identify strengths within themselves and to develop self-awareness that will propel them to great heights of satisfaction in life.
Her therapeutic approach is eclectic drawing mainly from Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Reality Therapy, Solution Focussed Brief Therapy and Strategic Family Therapy. She also uses expressive arts mainly play therapy and art therapy, particularly with children. These therapies are well established, researched, and respected within the profession. However, Angela encourages clients to discuss any concerns that arise in the course of counselling or should they have reservations regarding any specific intervention. To ensure best practice techniques Angela voluntarily participate in peer supervision.
Education, Training and Experience
Angela holds Masters degrees in Counselling Psychology as well as in Communication. She undertook undergraduate studies in Child and Family Development (BSc.). She also has a certificate in Child and Adolescent Counselling. To ensure that clients receive the best care, she is committed to continuing professional development, supervision and collaboration with other professionals. Angela is a member of the Kenya Counselling and Psychological Association (KCPA). Prior to starting private practice, Angela’s experience was in a hospital setting.
